Located in the area around La Spezia, the Regional Park of Porto Venere is about 400 hectares large, and it includes the Porto Venere promontory, the Islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto, and the protected marine areas.

As regards the vegetation, we find the same species both on the mainland and on the islands, because they separated only in the late quaternary.

This area is characterized by a luxuriant and variegated Mediterranean scrub which includes several species of plant life: the garigue, the Giant Orchids, Oaks, Aleppo Pines, and most of all the famous Porto Venere’s cornflower, a small plant, an exclusive endemism present in the promontory and the islands.

A peculiar animal of this area is the smallest European gecko (8 cm long, tail included), a night reptile which is also near threatened; throughout the region of Liguria, it is present exclusively in Torre Quezzi, in the province of Genoa, and on the islands of Tino and Tinetto.

An other peculiar characteristic of the park area is the karst topography, which is mainly visible on the island of Palmaria, characterized by a chalky substrate rich of caves and narrow and deep wells.
